Dear Towerpoint,

$34 billion as the appetizer, $500 billion as the entree?

Investors worldwide are unnerved. The U.S. implemented $34 billion in tariffs on Chinese goods earlier today, and minutes later, China hit 545 imported U.S. items with tariffs of their own. Additionally, just yesterday President Trump threatened to ultimately target $500 billion in tariffs on Chinese goods, which represents roughly the TOTAL amount of U.S. imports from China last year. Beijing has called it the "biggest trade war in economic history."

Understanding time will tell whether or not China's rhetoric ends up being true, the burgeoning trade war between the world's two largest economies, coupled with political instability in Europe, is creating mounting financial concern in many global markets, our domestic market (perhaps temporarily) not withstanding.

Why are investors concerned? Trade protectionism slowly chips away at worldwide economic growth. And while the U.S. has far more leverage, and far more staying power than any of its trading partners, the threat of tariffs immediately causes investors to recount one of the primary causes of the Great Depression:
